Author: Eudora Welty
In 3 words: colorful, intimate, complex (like any great Southern family drama)
The more Southern literature the more I love the genre. This classic family drama revolves around the Fairchild clan during the final days leading up to the wedding of Dabney (“not oldest, but most beautiful of the Fairchild girls”). I particularly loved that the house Shelmond is as much a character as any member of the family. The book ended with me longing to hear more of the family’s saga. I definitely recommend this one. If you like it you might try The Optimist’s Daughter another by Welty or The Heart is a Lonely Hunter by McCullers.
